2005 Visual-effects F/X Oscar short list is, as expected, dominated by SCIFI movies

Special effects can make or break a SCIFI movie. As the special effects industry becomes better at their craft, utilizing more and more believable CGI effects and/or environments, audiences are demanding more and more realistic effects in their movies in order to willingly “suspend their disbelief”. The visual-effects F/X Oscar therefore is a extremely important and prestigious award for the SCIFI movie community, some would argue (MrSCIFI included) that it is THE most important category in the Oscars.

Nominees for the visual-effects Oscar nominations to be announced next month, but according to SCIFI Wire, a short list for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' F/X Oscar will include, Batman Begins, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, King Kong, Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith and War of the Worlds.

A couple of big budget SCIFI movies notably absent from this short list The Island and Zathura.

15-minute clips from this short list of Oscar nominee potentials will be reviewed on Jan. 25, 2006, by a visual-effects award nominating committee. The committee will announce the final three nominees Jan. 31. The Oscars themselves will not be presented until the ceremony is broadcast live on ABC March 5, 2006.
