Aquaman - A new SCIFI TV series coming soon to a TIVO near you!

According to Variety.com the WB is teaming with Warner Bros. TV and the team behind the successful Smallville television series for a primetime take on another DC Comics superhero. This time the focus will be on Aquaman.

As with Smallville, the new Aquaman series will be focused on a young Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman, and just as Clark is not called Superman in the Smallville series, the new Aquaman series will not actually use the name Aquaman for Arthur Curry’s character.

Although the proof of concept for this show may have been the wide success of the Smallville series and the relatively high ratings that the Aquaman episode, the WB is not planning on making this series a spin-off of Smallville. In fact, they have chosen not to use the actor who played the roll in Smallville and plan on developing a totally separate back-story for the character.

And while "Smallville" recently generated great ratings with an episode featuring an appearance by Aquaman, the new project won't be a spinoff. To underline that point, Alan Ritchson, the actor who played Curry on "Smallville," isn't under consideration for the role in the pilot.

Variety goes on to discuss potential plotlines such as fighting ocean polluting corporations and exploring strange happenings in the Bermuda Triangle (Although I think the SCIFI Triangle Miniseries has corrnered the market on plot ideas for strange happenings in the Bermuda Triangle).

The decision to keep the Aquaman back-story separate from the one started in the Smallville TV series seems… well a bit odd to me, considering they will likely be forfeiting a great deal of potential cross promotion potential.

In any case I look forward to the new series, and hey, maybe they will do a Flash spin-off series next!
