New Doctor Who - Not looking promising

Last year the BBC sold the last year's season of the latest incarnation (...the 9th) of Doctor Who to the SciFi Channel. The SciFi Channel will run 13 episodes of the New Doctor Who this Month (March).

Now, maybe it was just the low budget special effects, maybe is was the bad acting, or maybe it is just that Doctor Who is a Brit thang... But I never really got into the origional Doctor Who series (which, coming from a guy who calls himself MrSCIFI, is saying a lot). The problem is that I believe the US audience that the SciFi Channel serves will not suffer through bad acting or low budget special effects either, and if the New Doctor Who is not a major improvement over its predecessors (and the photos on the website do not look promising) it just may be a very short lived new series here state-side.

Here is the official blurb on the New Who show from the SciFi Channel:
The Time Lord enters a new age.

Christopher Eccleston's Doctor is wise, funny and brave, an adventurer in time and space. His detached logic gives him a vital edge when the world's in danger. But when it comes to human relationships, he can be found wanting. That's why he needs Rose.

Rose Tyler is a shop-girl from the present day, trapped in a dull existence. From the moment she and the Doctor meet, they are soulmates; they understand and complement each other. With nothing to hold Rose back — neither her over-bearing mum nor her hapless boyfriend — she chooses to devote herself to the Doctor and his promise of fantastic adventures across the universe. And he doesn't let her down….

At the 2005 National Television Awards, voted for by the British public, Doctor Who scooped three of the top prizes: Most Popular Drama, Most Popular Actor (Christopher Eccleston) and Most Popular Actress (Billie Piper).

So don't delay — hop into the Tardis and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime (or two or three or 12…)

For those of you whould like to get a jump on the New SciFi Channel series... A DVD of the upcoming SciFi Channel season of the new Doctor Who is scheduled for a July release in the US, however since the show has already been broadcast in the UK and north of the US border in Canada the DVD's are widely availible on the internet.

  • The special effects are an enormous improvement over the original series, and I suspect you'll find the acting to be improved as well. However, Doctor Who is definitely British with a capital B, and even though I love the show, I can't help being concerned about how well it will play with a broad-based American audience. The difference between Doctor Who and the current Friday lineup of Stargate and Galactica is striking, even in the 15-second blurb currently running on SciFi.

You must also remember that Doctor Who was originally intended to be a children's/family show, and Russell Davies has brought a lot of that attitude back in the new series.

I have my hopes that the show will do well on SciFi... but I also have my concerns.

  • I have watched the entire new series, and find it to be better than most US based FANTASY shows. Certainly better than the tired alien world of the week Gate Series.

Fans of such shows as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Farscape should definately give the New Who a chance
