Superman Returns - Super-Budget Overruns?

For months we have been hearing roumors of budget troubles brewing on the Sydney set of Superman Returns, but with a collosal $250 million budget and a relitivally unknown staring cast (save kevin spacey who is playing Lex Luthor), it was hard for me to believe that even a special effects heavy movie like Superman Returns could run over a budget that large. Hard for me to believe that is, until I read an interesting behind the scenes article on the Premiere Magizine website in whick the author Tim Swanson interviewed the films costume designers among others.

In the interview costume designer Louise Mingenbach tells Permeire that they

avoided the armored suits that have recently been in vogue and designed a classic costume inspired by the Joe Shuster–drawn Superman from the ’30s, with high-tech upgrades.

The blue sections are made of a stretchy fabric called Milliskin, which fits over a padded muscle suit that acts like a girdle. The insignia on Superman’s chest is a molded latex relief (not a silk screen) composed of thousands of tiny “S” shields, which were laser-cut into the emblem. The red trunks have what Bronson calls “a patented package flattener” and Mingenbach terms “a little quiet cup,” to keep protuberances down to a minimum and everything PG. And for the occasional bathroom break, Mingenbach adds, “it also has a little zipper.”

Acording to the article they had more than 60 of these "high-tech" supersuits made. Although the article did not say how much each of the supersuits cost, costume designer Dan Bronson did say that ruining one “is similar to running a Carrera off a cliff.”

Ouch... and I'm not just talking about the package flattener.
